• THIS ASSIGNMENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. Don't hand it in on 4/18. Assigned Monday, 4/11/05, due 8:30 AM Monday, 4/18/05. Write a C/C++ program using the WordNet library. Your program should take command-line arguments to specify synonyms, antonyms, or hypernyms. Then, the program should read text from standard input, replace each word that you deem appropriate with a synonym, antonym, or hypernym, depending on the command line. This program is a toy to help you get a bit of experience with the WordNet API, don't concern yourself excessively with the problem of replacing exactly the right words. When you need to make choices, make them pragmatically.

• Assigned Wednesday 4/13/05. Due on paper at class time Monday 4/18/05.

  • Create a small lexicon and a small context-free grammar containing at least the words in the sentence "Time flies like an arrow." The lexicon and grammar should support at least three different interpretations of this sentence.
  • By hand, run the Earley algorithm on this sentence. Use the Peter Hellwig example from the handout I will give you Friday as a model.
  • Your completed parsing chart should contain several end points. For each end point, draw the corresponding parse tree and explain the meaning of the sentence for each tree.

• Assigned Monday 4/18/05, due 11:59PM Wednesday 4/27/05. Write an Earley-based parser.

• Assigned Wednesday 5/4/05, due 8:30AM Monday 5/9/05. Syntax-driven semantics.

• Assigned Wednesday 5/4/05. Find an interesting natural language tool and prepare a 10-minute presentation on it, including a demo if possible. I'll give you more details in class. We'll spread the presentations out over a few class days starting Wednesday 5/11/05.

• Assigned Wednesday 5/11/05. An exercise on Hidden Markov Models.

• Assigned Wednesday 5/18/05. Final project.
