When I say "be ready to discuss the reading," what do I mean?

Readings like Fred Brooks's The Tar Pit and the entirety of Steve McConnell's Code Complete or Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think are largely opinion pieces. They're expert opinion, informed by years of experience and on occasion by scientific studies. And they're also widely regarded as worth reading by generations of programmers. But they're opinion nonetheless.
